Biographical Sketch of the Late Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair; Provost of St Andrews, from 1842-1961
St Andrews: All St Andrews booksellers, 1874. 84p. stiff wrappers.
St Andrews would simply not be the town we know today if not for Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair. Playfair came to St Andrews after a wealthy man after a successful career in India.
St Andrews had declined ever since the John Knox the Protestant reformer and leader of the Scottish reformation had brought St Andrews down from its high position in the mid 1550's. For 300 years St Andrews had been a town long past its hay day.
This all changed due to Playfair and his visionary and persuasive way. Streets where paved, business began to thrive. the Union club amalgamated with the growing Royal and Ancient Golf Club, a club house was built, the Old Course widened for the growing number of golfers... No single person can be more tanked than Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair.
This is his story told by one of his closest friends, David Louden, Louden was also close to Tom Morris in later years. Item #14603
