'1888' was an important year in golf. It was the founding of the 2019 Open Championship venue, the Royal Portrush Golf Club, as well as the beginning of one of the first golf clubs in America, the St. Andrews Golf Club of Yonkers, founded in New York by Scot emigrant John Reid and a few friends. The year also saw the important 1888 Rules of Golf by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the near-final step in making golf 's Rules uniform. The 1888 Rules appear as an appendix.
In 1888 there also appeared in The Newcastle Evening Journal a two-part essay by pseudonymous author, 'Scriba', entitled 'A Tour Round Scottish Golf Courses'. Those essays appeared as an offprint publication shortly thereafter. That publication was one of only a few dozen golf book/booklet publications from all past years through 1888.
Some Golf in 1888 brings forth the travelogue of 'Scriba' for a golfing journey along the Rota: Dunbar-North Berwick-Gullane-Luffness-Musselburgh-Edinburgh-St Andrews-Carnoustie-Leven-Glasgow-Troon-Prestwick. It also includes the 1888 'Psychology of Golf ' essay from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. Also, we insert by kind permission of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews a facsimile booklet of the 1888 Rules of Golf.
The three essays in the original were without illustrations. Images in Some Golf in 1888 come from the period's other important golf publications, books of contemporaneous Scottish art, and a private collection. Item #11087
