FIRST EDITION. Oblong 4to. 10.5 x 7.5 inches. Unpaginated, [2] + [44] pp. (2 pp.letterpress captions and verse to each plate). In original paper-covered boards with spine and corner decorations and with red embossed vignette to upper board. Slight wear to extremities but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 22 full-page colour illustrations by Elinor Darwin to accompany verses by Bernard Darwin and by title page vignette. Bernard Darwin (1876-1961) was a grandson of Charles Darwin. He was a lawyer by training but not by inclination and moved into journalism, becoming a leading writer on golf, a game which he played well as an amateur. In 1906 he married Irish born artist, Elinor Mary Monsell (1879-1954) and found time to write a number of children's books that she ably illustrated. Item #6909
