It was ' Young Tom' Morris who in the old days first astonished the world by using a niblick to pitch the ball up to the pin and make it stop there 'as if it had a string tied to it'. other players quoted included Bobby Jones (several times), Braid, Hagen, Ouimet, Taylor, Vardon...
