Destiny & Other Poems

St Andrews: Privately printed, 1876. 514p. decorative cloth. First Ediiton. With 7 Calotype (sic) plates by Mr. Rogers and frontispiece of author with facsimile autograph plus many wood-engraved plates. 514 pages. Brick red cloth stamped in black, beveled edges, ruled and lettered in gilt, dark brown endpapers, all edges gilt. Wonderful homage to the town of St. Andrews. Important golf content including "A Piece of Rhyme Upon Golf To the St. Andrews Golf Club." "Composed before its half-yearly meeting in June 1852 to collect a few sixpences for James Herd (one of its members and best golfers) " In addition, it is believed this is the first publication of the now famous photograph of Old Tom Morris and his son Young Tom Morris. Young Tom died on Christmas day the year prior to this volume's publication at age 24. They each won the Open Championship four times, Old Tom competing for 36 consecutive years. Fittingly, the final poem is "In memory of Young Tom Morris, The Champion Golfer of the World" beginning opposite of the photograph. At its conclusion on the following page, is a brief biography of Young Tom of approximately 1000 words including some record accomplishments. Very slight cover soiling, several spots on eps, one page top with small repair else an unmarked copy, fine throughout. Note: No known copy of this volume, including this copy, includes the plate "The Storm", listed as at page 53. Very good. Item #10956
